SmartCAM v2015 Knowledge Based Machining Library

The knowledge-based machining improvements found in SmartCAM v2015 lay the groundwork for capturing user knowledge and shop expertise.

Save and Load Process Parameters

A new Knowledge Based Machining (KBM) library has been introduced that will serve as the repository for SmartCAM manufacturing data. For the v2015 release, the ability to Save, Load and Manage Process Parameter Sets has been implemented. The database can be accessed using a KBM Library menu under the Process menu, or via a new button on the process panel task bar.

Frequently used settings can be saved, organized, and recalled instantly whenever needed. Process toolpath creation is more consistent and accurate when proven parameter sets are used.

Frequently used, best-practice process parameters can be loaded into the active panel using the Load Process Parameters dialog box.

Save and Choose Machine in Job Info

The Job Information Machine tab has been enhanced to allow the Machine and Template File (SMF/CGT) settings and Description to be saved with a Machine Name using the new Save button. Once machine settings have been saved, they can be simply recalled at any time by picking the Machine Name from a list using the new Choose button. This feature makes it much faster and easier to specify the required code generator files.

The Machine Name is also used to associate items stored in the new Knowledge Based Machining (KBM) Library to a specific machine.

Enhanced Job Information Machine tab allows machine to be defined and saved. Code generator files are automatically loaded when Machine is selected.

Save and Choose Material in Job Info

The Job Information Material tab has been enhanced to allow a new Material Name and Description to be defined directly from within the SmartCAM application, and then saved to the material pick list for future reuse. Materials defined within the SmartCAM application are created using a template material file specified in the Options - JOS Planner Options dialog box, which provides default operation settings that can then be easily edited using the Material Librarian application. Once appropriate operation parameters have been defined for the new material, the operation Calculate button can be used when defining a new step, to automatically set the operations parameters.

The part material name is also used to associate items stored in the new Knowledge Based Machining (KBM) Library to a specific part material.

Populate Material with Operation Parameters

The Populate function on the Operation tab of the Add/Edit Step dialog box has been enhanced to allow existing, matching operation parameter entries in the active material file to be updated with the current settings. Additionally, the system now displays a confirmation message whenever the Populate button is selected, in order to prevent the material file from being accidentally updated.
