SmartCAM application crashes after opening and closing online help

Opening and closing the SmartCAM help will cause the application to crash. After closing the online help, it takes about 10 to 30 seconds and then the application will fail.

A recent Windows update is conflicting with the Microsoft HTMLHelp support. This update is affecting a number of different applications that use the Internet Explorer iFrame support. Microsoft has been informed of this problem.

Update: Microsoft's October 14th, 2014 Cumulative Security Update is supposed to have the fix for this problem. Use Windows Update and install all patches and updates to get the fix. Or, you can go to the Microsoft website and use the instructions to install the update manually.

The resolution is to uninstall the Microsoft Security Hotfix that caused the problem.

The problematic update is KB2977629: MS14-052 - Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: September 9, 2014.

To uninstall the update complete the following:

  • Navigate to START - Control Panel - Programs and Features.
  • In the left panel, choose "View installed updates."
  • Search for "KB2977629."
  • If present, uninstall it. You will need to reboot your PC for the uninstallation to complete.

If your computer automatically installs updates, you will need to hide this update from the Windows Update tool. Otherwise, it will be reinstalled the next time Windows Updates completes a check.
